The Government Study Committee announced on Apr. 14 a proposed article for the May 11 annual Town Meeting that would amend Chapter 42 of Halifax’s General Bylaws to change the name of the Board of Selectmen to Select Board and update all references throughout town bylaws.
The committee said this proposal aims to modernize terminology used in municipal governance while leaving the form and function of town government unchanged. The recommendation follows a trend among Massachusetts towns, particularly in the South Shore region, that have adopted “Select Board” as a more contemporary and inclusive term.
According to information released by the committee, only the board’s name would be affected if voters approve the amendment. There would be no changes to how members are elected, how the board operates, or its executive powers and responsibilities. All existing authority held by the current Board of Selectmen would remain with the newly named Select Board.
If passed at Town Meeting and approved by the Massachusetts Attorney General, references to “Board of Selectmen” or “Selectman” will be updated across all bylaws, policies, rules, contracts, and official documents. The committee emphasized that this is solely a language update intended for clarity and inclusivity.
To provide more information about this warrant article and other proposals under consideration, an informational meeting will take place on Thursday, April 23 at 6 p.m. at Town Hall on Plymouth Street. Additional forums and drop-in sessions are planned in coming weeks so residents can ask questions or share feedback. Residents may also submit comments through an online form available on Halifax’s website or contact the Government Study Committee directly via email.
